The experience

Professional Teeth Whitening in Christchurch

Confidence starts with your smile.

Most people come to me for professional teeth whitening because of a date in the diary — a wedding, a birthday, photographs they’d rather enjoy than endure.

Others simply want to stop thinking about it.

There’s an option to suit both. And I’ll help you work out which one is right for you.

How it works

What does professional teeth whitening actually do?

Tooth enamel may look completely solid, but it contains microscopic spaces that allow whitening agents to travel through the tooth. Over time, coloured compounds from things like food, drinks and ageing build up within the tooth as well as on the surface.

Whitening gel travels through those microscopic spaces and breaks down the coloured compounds within the enamel and dentine, which is why professional teeth whitening can change more than just surface staining.

I’ve had countless clients arrive convinced their teeth simply don’t whiten because strips or whitening toothpastes haven’t given them the change they hoped for.

Often, their teeth can still improve considerably — they simply needed a different approach.

Choosing

Which one is right for me?

If you want it done — laser whitening. One hour, one appointment, and you leave with the change already made.

If you’d rather take your time — custom trays. Moulded to your teeth, worn at home over a couple of weeks, entirely at your own pace.

If you want the immediate result and the flexibility to maintain it — most people choose the two together. Your in-clinic treatment gives you the immediate change, while your trays let you continue whitening and top up at home whenever you feel you need to.

Not sure? Tell me about your teeth and what you’re hoping for. If the simpler option is the right one, that’s what I’ll say.

Laser whitening

Around an hour to yourself, with most clients seeing around 10–14 shades of improvement.

You lie back, settle in and watch Netflix while I check on you throughout the treatment.

This is the one for a deadline — or simply for wanting it behind you.

Custom whitening trays

Custom-made to fit your own teeth, helping keep the whitening gel evenly positioned while you whiten at home.

You whiten at home, gently, over a couple of weeks. The trays themselves can often be reused for years with fresh whitening gel.

The complete result

Why most people choose both

Because they do quite different things.

The in-clinic treatment gives you the immediate result. The trays give you the flexibility to continue whitening at home and top up your smile whenever you feel it needs it.

No whitening result is permanent — teeth gradually pick up colour again over time, and everyone is different. Having your custom trays means you can top up at home with fresh gel rather than starting again from scratch.

And if trays aren’t for you, returning clients can come back for a follow-up treatment — $140 when booked within three months, with other returning-client offers available after that.

Honest pricing

What will it cost?

Laser whitening$260
Custom trays$285 · $170 with laser
Both together$430
Top-up gel$45 one · $70 two

No consultation fee. No “from” price that grows at the counter.

Clients often tell me they’ve been quoted around $600 for custom trays and $700 or more for in-chair whitening at a dental practice. Those are simply the figures clients regularly tell me they’ve been quoted — individual practices differ.

If a few of you are whitening before the same occasion, groups of two or more pay less per person.

In the studio

What happens when you arrive?

You’re coming to my private, home-based Christchurch studio — a dedicated professional treatment room, one-to-one, with no reception desk and nobody moving you along.

We talk first — about your teeth, what may be contributing to the staining, and what’s genuinely realistic for you. Then you settle in, and I take care of the rest.

Afterwards I’ll take you through your aftercare, including what to avoid for the first 24 hours while your teeth are temporarily a little more susceptible to picking up colour.

If you already know your teeth are sensitive, I recommend using Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief for a week or two beforehand and letting me know before we begin.

Comfortable & kind to enamel

The questions I’m asked most

Will my teeth be sensitive afterwards?

Most people feel nothing at all.

Some notice something mild and temporary, and a smaller number a little more — and when it happens, it usually settles within a day.

Does whitening damage enamel?

Professional teeth whitening is designed to change the colour of the tooth without removing enamel.

Whitening gel travels through microscopic spaces in the enamel and breaks down coloured compounds within the tooth — it isn’t sanding, scraping or stripping the surface away.

That’s very different from abrasive or acidic DIY methods such as aggressively scrubbing with charcoal or baking soda, or using lemon juice.

Before dental work

Planning crowns, veneers or caps?

Crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings don’t whiten in the same way natural teeth do.

If you’re planning cosmetic dental work, whitening first can be important because your new dental work will usually be colour-matched to the shade of your teeth at the time.

Whiten first. Then have the work matched to your new colour.

Real results

What difference will I actually see?

Most of my clients see around 10–14 shades of improvement, measured before and after with a shade guide.

But teeth are individual, and so are results. Your starting shade, natural tooth colour and the type of staining all play a part. If your teeth are already particularly white, I’ll tell you before we begin — I’d rather set a realistic expectation than promise something your teeth can’t deliver.

One appointment can make a significant difference. If you’d like to go whiter still, you can build on your result with a follow-up treatment or custom whitening trays at home.

And if you ever leave feeling genuinely unhappy with your result, please tell me. I’d always rather have the opportunity to take another look and make sure you’re happy than have you walk away disappointed.
